Shab-e-Miraj occurred on the 27th night of Rajab around 621, just after the year of sorrow. This incredible journey occurred when the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) faced hardship and the most challenging year when He lost two of his best companion and supporter of life, first His wife Hazrat Khadija (RA) and second His uncle Hazrat Abu Talib (RA).
Hence all kinds of preparation and awareness for Ramadān should commence once Rajab sets in. "Rajab is the key to months of goodness and blessings." (Ibn Rajab) "The month of Rajab is a month of cultivation, Sha'bān is the month of irrigation while Ramadān is the month of harvest. Rajab is like the wind, Sha'bān like the clouds
The year is twelve months, of which four are sacred, three consecutive months - Dhu'l-Qa'dah, Dhu'l-Hijjah and Muharram - and the Rajab of Mudar which comes between Jumaada and Sha'baan." (Reported by al-Bukhaari, no. 1741, in [Kitaab] al-Hajj, al-Khutbah Ayaam Mina; and by Muslim, no. 1679, in [Kitaab] al-Qisaamah, Baab Tahreem
The year is twelve months, of which four are sacred: three are in succession, namely, Dhul-Qi'dah, Dhul-Hijjah and Muharram, and (the fourth one) Rajab (of the tribe of) Mudar, which is between Jumada (Thani) and Sha'ban." (Al-Bukhari & Muslim) Muharram. Muharram is the first month of the Hijri calendar and one of the four sacred months.
"That is a month to which people do not pay much attention, between Rajab and Ramadan. It is a month in which the deeds are taken up to the Lord of the worlds, and I like that my deeds be taken up when I am fasting." (An-Nasa'i) As Ramadan is the month of harvesting good deeds, fasting before and after multiplies the harvest.
The months of Rajab, Dhū al-Qa'dah, Dhu al-Ḥijjah, and Muḥarram are considered sacred. When Was Year 1? Like the Persian calendar, Islamic time reckoning begins in 622 CE when the Muslim prophet Muhammad migrated to Medina.
